The Gull and Lantern

Fish and chips and a pint, twelve pounds. The chips are properly salted.

The Gull and Lantern is a public house a short walk from the High Street, past the church and a row of terraced houses. A chalkboard outside offers fish and chips and a pint for twelve pounds.

The bar is low-ceilinged and warm and smells of beer and wood polish. There is a fireplace with a table beside it, which is taken early. The fish is fresh and the chips are thick and properly salted.

Customers greet one another by name. Dogs are admitted and generally settle under a table without being told. Planning applications are discussed at the bar, with feeling.

The pub quiz league meets here in January, when there is little else on. Food is served at midday and in the early evening. Tables cannot be booked.
