Bandstand to be ready for first concert

The roof is on and the ironwork is next. The fence stays until the paint is dry.

The restoration of the bandstand in Seabrook Gardens will be finished in time for the first concert of the season in May, the Town Council’s Amenities Committee heard on Tuesday.

Work began in October. The roof timbers have been replaced and the roof has been covered again. The iron columns and the balustrade have been taken back to bare metal. They will be painted when the weather allows, which the contractor, a Hartbury firm, expects to be in April.

The steps on the east side, which had dropped, have been reset.

The scaffolding and the temporary fence around the bandstand will stay in place until the work is finished. The Council asks the public to keep outside the fence and to keep dogs outside it.

The cost is being met by the Council and by the bandstand restoration fund. Contributions to the fund are still received at the Town Hall.

The paths, the flowerbeds and the war memorial are not affected.

A Council spokesman said the work was on time. “January was against us and February has not been much better,” he said. “The roof is on. The rest is paint.”
