Lighthouse keeper found dead

The light was not showing on the Wednesday night. A reprint from the Chronicle of 1982.

From the Seabrook Chronicle, 1982.

The keeper of Seabrook lighthouse was found dead inside the tower on Thursday morning.

The skippers of two boats returning to harbour on Wednesday night reported that the light was not showing. The lamps in the tower were also out. A man from the harbour office walked out to the point at first light, when the keeper did not answer the telephone, and found him.

Police said that no letter or note had been found. The station log has been taken away for examination. The Chronicle understands that a number of pages are missing from it.

The keeper’s name has not been released. He had kept the light for many years and was well known at the harbour.

The light was shown again on Thursday night. An inquest will be opened at Hartbury in due course.
