Carter’s Butchers

Family butcher. The van outside will be moved shortly.

Carter’s Butchers is on the High Street, a few doors towards the pier from Harper’s Bookshop. Rita Carter serves behind the counter and knows most of her customers by name, order and circumstances.

The shop sells beef, lamb, pork and poultry, with bacon cut to order and sausages made on the premises. Pies are baked on Fridays and are usually gone by noon.

Deliveries are made in the morning. The van stops outside with its hazard lights on and takes up half the street until it has been unloaded. Motorists are asked to be patient.

Christmas orders are taken from the first week of November. The shop closes at one o’clock on Wednesdays.

What the locals say

“Rita knew next door was for sale before the board went up. I had it from her over a pound of sausages.”
